Senior Maritime Officer

Mr. Numbu Issahaque Sumabe is a Senior Maritime Officer (Environment & Safety) at the Ghana Maritime Authority. He has over 15 years of experience in the maritime industry where he has served in various roles and led many initiatives. He has excellent working knowledge in most international maritime instruments and have expertise in the areas of ocean governance, marine environment protection, sustainable practices in shipping, and international development practice.

He is currently the focal person for maritime environmental matters in his organization, where he in particular, leads the development and implementation of maritime decarbonization initiatives. He is a key person among Ghana’s delegation to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR) Sub-committee, and the Intersessional Working Group on the Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG) meetings.

He has an MPhil degree in Development Geography from the University of Oslo, Norway and an M.A. degree in Ports and Shipping Administration from the Regional Maritime University, Ghana. He is also currently pursuing a PhD degree at the University of Ghana.

His research interest are in the areas of shipping decarbonization, ocean governance, and maritime pollution issues (marine litter and oil spills).
