KATHERINE MASUI KITHIKII

Assistant Director, Maritime Governance and Compliance at the Kenya Maritime Authority

A legal expert and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with over 15 years of experience.
She holds a Master’s degree in International Maritime Law from the IMO, International Maritime Law Institute and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies from University of Wollongong – Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Kent, Canterbury, UK and a Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of law (Advocates Training Program) and the Guildford College of Law, UK (Solicitors Training Program).
She has undergone professional training in policy and legislative drafting, maritime regulation and enforcement, flag state, port state and coastal implementation, investigation and prosecution of maritime crimes, senior port management, mediation as a form of alternative dispute resolution mechanism among others.
Katherine is a trainer of trainer recognized by various institutions including the umbrella of lawyers without borders and US Department of Justice/OPDAT.
Ms Kithikii is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and an ExCom member of WOMESA Kenya Chapter. She is currently in the IMO Gender network where she has a mentee who has completed her Master’s programme in Humanities at IMLI.

Ms. Kithikii currently holds the port of the Assistant Director, Maritime Governance and Compliance at the Kenya Maritime Authority progressively involved in the development and review of sector policies, advisory and research on related matters, development or review of legislation, negotiations and/or discussions related to the review and adoption of international instruments, criminal justice systems and reforms among others.

Previously Ms Kithikii served as the Acting Corporation Secretary and Head of Legal Services – Bandari Maritime Academy and a State Prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Kenya.
